Perplexity and Nvidia bring the Portable Computer local AI agent to Windows
The agent runs locally, but it is limited to RTX graphics cards with at least 24GB of video memory.
Perplexity and Nvidia released Portable Computer for Windows on Sept. 14. The agent is designed to run locally on the machine first, rather than depending on remote processing for its work.
Availability is tied to hardware. The agent requires a GeForce RTX or RTX PRO graphics card with 24GB of VRAM or more. PCs with less capable GPUs are not part of the announced compatible configurations.
Portable Computer is presented as a tool that can carry out several steps to complete a task, instead of answering a single question. The release puts Perplexity in the field of assistants that execute on the user’s own computer, an approach that leans heavily on the graphics resources installed there.
Neither company’s plans for widening hardware support beyond those RTX cards were detailed in the announcement.
