GrapheneOS accuses Google of keeping Android 17 features for Pixel
The project says Android 17 reserves APIs and security patches for Pixel phones, leaving other Android builds without them.
GrapheneOS has accused Google of gatekeeping Android 17, saying the release keeps features and security fixes for Pixel phones. The project raised the concern over APIs and security patches that, it says, only Pixel devices receive in this version of Android.
The complaint names two things: the programming interfaces Android 17 exposes to apps, and the security patches that ship with the system. Both, according to GrapheneOS, are reserved for Google’s own hardware instead of being shared across Android. The project says the arrangement leaves other builds of Android without the same interfaces and without the same patches.
The accusation targets how Google distributes the newest parts of Android, and what is left for systems built on Android that are not Google’s. GrapheneOS, which develops its own version of the system, says the gap covers both new capabilities and the fixes that keep devices protected.
